Airside Safety Awareness Hazards

Hazard is a situation or condition that could result in unfavourable outcomes.

Types of Aircraft Hazards

  1. Engine Hazards

  2. Propeller

  3. Antannae

Engine Hazards

  • Jet Blast

  • Jet Intake

Jet Blast: This occurs as exhaust from the jet engine. Jet blast is the most severe hazard, exhaust from the jet engine could cause burns, blow over, make an individual suffer eye/ respiratory irritation.

Jet Intake: the jet fans creates a suction which is capable of pulling in Fod which is around the engine like nuts, bolts and unit lead devices.

What are Fods?

Fod stands for foreign object debris and is a substance, debris or article alien to a vehicle or system which would potentially cause damage. Fod are objects that are found on the run way such as baggage tags, suitcase, caster wheels, plastic coffee cups, tools, nuts and bolts, plastic bags, aluminium cans, plastic bottles, construction materials, aircraft parts, books, pens or pencils, mobile phones, Rocks or gravels.

Think of the infamous Airfrance flight 4590 concord crash at paris in 2000 that was caused due to a tire being punctured by rolling over a piece of metallic debris.

Fod cost the aerospace industry four billion dollars per year and injured workers, pilots and passengers.

Propellers: You can’t identify the direction of a propeller. when it is stationary do not move in front of it

Non-Aircrafts Hazards

  • Complacency

  • Distractions

  • Lack of Awareness

  • Lack of Familiarity, experience and knowledge

  • Ignorance

  • Pressure

  • Lack of resources

  • Lack of teamwork.
